Every rugby league team that has ever existed โ across every competition, every country, every era โ is competing in a single eternal knockout tournament that never stops and never ends. The bracket never closes. The stadium never empties. Someone is always playing.
The Infinite Rugby League Stadium is a simulated live sports dashboard that pits rugby league teams from across all of history against each other in a continuous single-elimination tournament. The 1908 Eastern Suburbs Roosters can face the 2019 Tonga Mate Ma'a. The 1972 St George Dragons can be knocked out by the 2003 Leeds Rhinos. Eras collide, competitions dissolve, and the impossible matchups pile up โ because in this stadium, time means nothing and someone always has to go home.
The competition draws from 90 distinct clubs and representative sides, spanning:
Each club is entered across multiple years of their existence โ roughly one entry per 7 years of history. This means the 1908 South Sydney Rabbitohs, the 1967 South Sydney Rabbitohs, and the 2024 South Sydney Rabbitohs are all separate and independent competitors.
This generates approximately 615 team-year combinations in total, making each tournament entry unique and historically grounded.
Every major club has a real historical player roster embedded in the simulation. When a match is played, each team fields an all-time greatest XIII drawn from its historical player pool. So the 1982 Canberra Raiders might field Mal Meninga, Laurie Daley, and Bradley Clyde, while the 2023 Brisbane Broncos line up Adam Reynolds, Payne Haas, and Selwyn Cobbo.
Teams without a specific historical roster โ mostly smaller QRL and international sides โ draw from a plausible generic pool.
The tournament is a true single-elimination knockout. Every team plays once per round. The loser goes home. The winner advances. There are no second chances, no reseeding, no wildcards.
615 entries are padded to the nearest power of 2, which is 1,024 slots. The remaining 409 slots are filled by byes, which are automatically skipped. That is approximately 800 real matches to produce one champion.
| Round | Scheduled | Real Games | Survivors |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | 512 | ~307 | 512 |
| Round 2 | 256 | ~256 | 256 |
| Round 3 | 128 | ~128 | 128 |
| Round of 64 | 64 | 64 | 64 |
| Round of 32 | 32 | 32 | 32 |
| Quarter-Finals | 8 | 8 | 8 |
| Semi-Finals | 4 | 4 | 4 |
| Preliminary Finals | 2 | 2 | 2 |
| Grand Final | 1 | 1 | 1 champion |
If scores are level at full time, the match goes to golden point extra time. The clock keeps running, events keep firing, and the first try or field goal ends the match immediately. Penalty goals and conversions do not count in extra time. The progress bar turns red during golden point to signal the match is on the line.
When a champion is crowned, Tournament 2 begins immediately with a fresh random shuffle of all 615 entries. The draw is never the same twice. The stadium never closes.
The speed of the simulation is adjustable using the SPEED dropdown in the footer. It takes effect immediately โ no page refresh required โ so you can crank it up to seed the bracket quickly, then dial back to enjoy individual matches.
| Speed Setting | Real Time Per Game | Multiplier | Full Tournament |
|---|---|---|---|
| ร600 (8s) | 8 seconds | 600ร | ~1.8 hours |
| ร160 (30s) | 30 seconds | 160ร | ~6.7 hours |
| ร80 (1 min) | 1 minute | 80ร | ~13 hours |
| ร53 (90s) โ default | 90 seconds | 53ร | ~20 hours |
| ร40 (2 min) | 2 minutes | 40ร | ~26 hours |
| ร16 (5 min) | 5 minutes | 16ร | ~67 hours |
| ร1 (real time) | 80 minutes | 1ร | ~44 days |
At the default 90-second speed, Round 1 alone takes approximately 7.5 hours to complete. A full tournament from first whistle to Grand Final takes around 20 hours of continuous running.
The recommended approach is to start at ร600 to seed the bracket with a few rounds of results, then drop back to 90 seconds or slower to follow matches properly.
The main panel shows the current live match: team names, the year each team is from, their competition, the live score, match clock, and which half is being played.
A live scoring breakdown shows tries, conversions, penalty goals, and field goals โ each with the scorer's name and the minute they occurred. A central column tracks the try count, conversion ratio, and penalty tally at a glance. A half-time score is displayed once the 40-minute mark is reached.
A live commentary feed updates throughout the match, covering tries, conversions, penalty goals, field goals, sin bins, injuries, big hits, half time, and full time. General play lines fire between events to keep the feed feeling live. The most recent call always sits at the top.
The commentary can be read aloud using the browser's built-in speech synthesis engine. Click the AUDIO button in the header to activate it. A voice selector dropdown lets you audition every English voice installed on your machine. The default is Google UK English Male.
Audio requires a user interaction to activate (browser policy). It will not start automatically on page load. The best experience is in Chrome or Edge on desktop.
A panel showing the next five scheduled matchups from the current round โ the upcoming bracket draw made visible.
The five most recently completed matches, showing both teams, the final score, and which side advanced.
A running leaderboard of the tournament's top 10 point scorers, tracking tries (4pts), conversions (2pts), and field goals (1pts). The table updates live during the current match and accumulates across all completed games. It resets at the start of each new tournament.
A separate Bracket page shows the full tournament tree as it builds. Each round is displayed as a column with completed matches showing winner and loser. The current live match is highlighted. The bracket page also shows which tournament is running, which round is in progress, and approximately how many teams remain alive.
Every major club has a custom-designed SVG crest in their actual team colours. Any team without a specific crest receives an automatically generated logo โ the team name is hashed to produce a consistent colour pair and the club's initials are rendered inside a circular badge.
